No to the unfair reform of borough financing

Meme_PascalEN.jpgMayor Coderre’s reform of borough financing is sloppy, unfair, and will have serious and irreversible effects on services for many Montrealers.

While it is boroughs that provide most direct services to citizens, this reform slashes many boroughs’ operating budgets.

With this reform, Mayor Coderre is forcing several local administrations to:

·         Implement a special tax (nicknamed the “Coderre Tax”) in order to ensure essential services like garbage collection;

·         Slash budgets for snow removal and health inspections for buildings;

·         Cut opening hours for many local services such as libraries, pools, and skating rinks.

Moreover, the boroughs most affected have already made huge sacrifices to control their budgets, which were underfinanced even before this reform.

I am against this reform that will force cuts to local services and I ask Mayor Coderre to rethink his decision to impose this unfair reform.

    This “Coderre tax” will directly harm lower income households, and people – of all incomes -that have families. It can be really tough to get kids to libraries, pools, and other centers when you have a limited amount of time. Those services are also extremely helpful outlets for those who cannot afford more.

    Charging garbage collection is absurd and horrifying. Its true, we should be trying to reduce garbage and encourage recyclying or compost, but nothing about this reform suggests that that is the goal!

    Coderre seems to be out to get the little-guy.
