Mayor Coderre’s reform of borough financing is sloppy, unfair, and will have serious and irreversible effects on services for many Montrealers.
While it is boroughs that provide most direct services to citizens, this reform slashes many boroughs’ operating budgets.
With this reform, Mayor Coderre is forcing several local administrations to:
· Implement a special tax (nicknamed the “Coderre Tax”) in order to ensure essential services like garbage collection;
· Slash budgets for snow removal and health inspections for buildings;
· Cut opening hours for many local services such as libraries, pools, and skating rinks.
Moreover, the boroughs most affected have already made huge sacrifices to control their budgets, which were underfinanced even before this reform.
I am against this reform that will force cuts to local services and I ask Mayor Coderre to rethink his decision to impose this unfair reform.
