The sad events that took place on May 1st in the Sud-Ouest borough make it clear just how dangerous the exits of residential laneways on the entire island of Montreal remain.
Waiting for something to be done is no longer an option; we must act now to implement appropriate pre-emptive measures. Laneways, after all, are where many of our children play.
It is possible to secure the entrances and exits by adding greenery, installing speed bumps, or even by closing some of them off with flower pots. Residents must make their voices heard and inform the borough administration of which laneways pose the greatest risks.
The number of green and/or safe laneway projects remains miniscule in our borough. It is time for the citizens of Outremont to take matters into their own hands by urging the administration to give these matters the attention they deserve.
