In 2017, women in Montreal still pay more than men do for equivalent goods and services. You need only stroll down the aisles of any Montreal pharmacy to find a number of similar products with higher price tags for women. Considering that in Montreal, women’s average salary is 81.4 % of men’s, this practice is totally unacceptable.
In 2015, Bill de Blasio, the mayor of New York City, commissioned a study on gender-differentiated pricing in his city. The study showed that women paid, on average, 7 % more than men did for equivalent goods. New York City adopted a by-law aiming to eliminate these “gender taxes”.
The Quebec Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms forbids any form of discrimination and recognizes gender equality. We ask that the Government of Quebec eliminate “pink taxes”.
